Red Light Therapy: From NASA Technology to Your Winter Routine

Red light therapy was originally developed by NASA to grow plants in space. Today it's one of the most evidence-backed wellness tools available — especially during Minnesota winters.

In the late 1980s, NASA scientists were trying to solve a problem: how do you grow plants in space? The answer involved specific wavelengths of red and near-infrared light. What they discovered in the process — that these wavelengths had profound effects on human tissue healing — launched an entire field of medical research.

The Science of Photobiomodulation

Red light therapy (also called photobiomodulation or LLLT — Low Level Laser Therapy) works by delivering specific wavelengths of light to your cells. These wavelengths penetrate the skin and are absorbed by cytochrome c oxidase — a light receptor inside the mitochondria of every cell in your body. The result is increased ATP (adenosine triphosphate) production, which is essentially more cellular energy. This triggers a cascade of beneficial effects:

  • Reduced inflammation
  • Accelerated tissue repair
  • Increased collagen production
  • Enhanced circulation
  • Improved cellular function

Not All Panels Are Created Equal

At Body Techs, we use the PlatinumLED BioMax — an FDA Class II Medical Device and the highest-irradiance red light panel commercially available. Most panels you'll find online output under 50 mW/cm². The BioMax outputs over 100 mW/cm², third-party lab verified. It delivers seven specific wavelengths (630nm, 660nm, 810nm, 830nm, 850nm, and 1060nm) — covering everything from skin-surface collagen stimulation all the way to deep muscle and joint tissue recovery. This is the same class of device used by medical professionals, physical therapists, and elite sports teams worldwide.

Why Minnesota Winters Make Red Light Therapy Essential

Minnesota averages only 198 sunny days per year. From November through March, many residents experience:

  • Vitamin D deficiency (affects 70%+ of Minnesotans in winter)
  • Seasonal Affective Disorder (S.A.D.) — affecting 4–6% of the population
  • Increased joint pain and stiffness from cold
  • Slower recovery from exercise
  • Dull, dry skin

Red light therapy addresses all of these. The wavelengths used in therapeutic devices mimic the beneficial portions of natural sunlight without the UV damage risk.

What the Research Shows

  • Chronic pain reduction (arthritis, fibromyalgia, back pain)
  • Wound healing and tissue repair
  • Skin rejuvenation and anti-aging
  • Depression and mood disorders
  • Athletic performance and recovery

How to Get the Most from Your Sessions at Body Techs

Our red light therapy bed delivers full-body treatment in 10–20 minutes. To maximize results:

  1. Come with clean, dry skin (no lotions or oils that block light penetration)
  2. For fat loss goals: do 20–30 minutes of light movement within 30 minutes of your session
  3. For skin benefits: consistent sessions 2–3x per week for 4–6 weeks
  4. For mood and energy: morning sessions tend to have the strongest effect on circadian rhythm

Winter in Minnesota doesn't have to mean feeling sluggish, stiff, and low-energy. Red light therapy is one of the most effective tools we have for maintaining your health through the dark months.
